Over the past years, South Asians who immigrated to Canada brought their whole culture with them to Canada. Art was included in their culture (and still is); whether it is visual, performing or musical.
Specifically in Toronto, there is a gallery called the South Asian Visual Arts Centre (SAVAC). SAVAC is the only non-profit, artist run centre in Canada dedicated to the development and presentation of contemporary visual art by South Asian Artists.Their programming is national in scope, but they are actively engaged with regional and international discussions informing the development of contemporary South Asian art. SAVAC plays a vital role in the visual arts sector in Canada by advocating for South Asian artists and culturally diverse issues and practices. (SAVAC- About Page)
In 2011, the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) Awards were hosted in Toronto. Many people, including Canadians came out to this big event to honor the Bollywood film stars. Bollywood movies have grown bigger with more exposure everyday and are now watched by many people, including Canadians! South Asians have brought their performing arts culture all around the world and are getting higher and higher each day.
When South Asians immigrated to Canada, they couldn't forget music. Music is a way of being free and expressing yourself. In India, there are many Bollywood stars that sing and make albums. Immigrants have brought over more traditional South Asian music. And they have brought their dancing with it.
A new movie coming out soon, called "The Hundred Foot Journey" is a perfect example of how South Asians bring their culture with them everywhere. Be sure to check it out.
